Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.
I am totally into this now, on the second go round! I haven’t read past book 2, not because I didn’t want to , I just got distracted with other shiny books and kinda forgot about it. But watching the film made me want to start the series again AND I WILL FINISH IT.
I enjoyed the characters much more this time. Clary was getting on my nerves before, and I didn’t like the way she treated Simon but I think I’ve got over that now. And Jace just cracks me up.
Magnus has to be my favourite character though, (if you know me, this would be obvious, the big fag hag that I am!) and I really hope we get to see more of him in later books, and see his and Alec’s relationship develop.
I also liked the role reversal thing going on. It’s nearly always the girls mooning over the boys in Paranormal Romance so it’s nice to see a guy doing the hard work and pouring his heart out for once. Poor Jace. However, SHE’S SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR SISTER YEAH! Not cool (but also a bit hot… until you think about your own siblings and then feel a bit sick. Gross).
I do have one gripe though: The titles. Surely they should be named after whichever ‘mortal instrument’ the book is about…there is not even a place called City of Ashes, it is all a lie. But in summary, I’m pretty psyched for the next book!
