For Tamsin Angel, Christmas is always the biggest and best… chic parties and a little showbiz sparkle are a must. This year though, things aren’t going quite as planned…

With bailiffs suddenly at the door and her husband nowhere to be found, it looks like Christmas just got downsized. Moving into her sister’s one-bedroom flat, she wonders whether things will ever be the same again.

After losing her husband on Christmas Eve, Sam Angel has rebuilt her life around her son Jacob and her new business – The White Angel Bakery. She’s also found herself a very handsome, loving boyfriend, but is struggling to let go of the past.

Thrown together with a sprinkle of Christmas magic, Sam and Tamsin might just learn a little more about each other – and themselves. But when disaster strikes at the bakery, will they be able to save the day in time for Christmas?

Review

Snow Angels, Secrets and Christmas Cake is a humorous festive read about family, making the most of bad situations, and letting go. Queue a high-pitched rendition of Let It Go!

I wasn’t instantly hooked on this book, but after a few chapters of switching narratives between Tamsin and Sam, I became accustomed to the structure and started to enjoy it.

I thought the contrast between the sister’s personalities worked well, making this a realistic, enthralling story full of drama, sarcasm and just enough Christmas magic.

I liked Sam from the start. With her no-nonsense and sarcastic approach to life. She’s finding it hard to move in from the death of her husband, but she’s determined not to let it hold her back.

Tamsin was a little harder to warm to, being a designer-loving, party-planning, living-beyond-her-means type who is all about perfection and hiding her Northern accent and real self from her circle of fake (in every way) friends. But, as the story went on and Tamsin loses everything she thought she loved, apart from her sister, I definitely warmed up to her.

I also really loved the Cheshire setting as that’s my home county- although not the posh part, blates- so that was an extra bonus.

Snow Angels, Secrets and Christmas Cake felt like an honest, and often funny portrayal of two sisters who are trying to get through the bad times by creating a little bit of Christmas cheer.

Happy Christmas Eve to you all!

As I’m sure is the same for most of you, reading has taken a bit of a back seat the last few days. I arrived home for Christmas and have been spending time with the family, and friends and the like. I was hoping to have finished the festive ARCS I have by now, but I’m a bit behind. Oh well.

www1

Currently Reading:
I’ve only just started on Mr. Miracle by Debbie Macomber, but hope to finish it in the next few days. I also started reading A Christmas Visitor by Anne Perry on the train home. Liking it a lot.

Recently Finished:
I just finished Snow Angels, Secrets and Christmas Cake which was a bit slow to start with, but I liked it in the end. I’ll try to get my review up after Boxing Day. I was reading The Girl With the Glass Feet too but found it way too pretentious and slow so I didn’t bring it with me. I very much doubt I’ll pick it up again when I get back to London.

Up Next:
I honestly have no idea – it depends what I get for Christmas. I’m itching to start The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick which was a present that I’ve already opened, (thanks Dora!) but I didn’t bring it with me because it’s a bit too bulky.

The topic for this week is:The Top Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Bringing This Year.

Ooooooooh so many, so, so many. Most of the books I really want are ones that I never got round to buying…I hope Santa has a bottomless sack! 😉

Dear Santa,

I have a been a very good girl this year, so if you would be so kind, I would like these books in my life…(in no particular order).

ttt1coll

More Than This – Patrick Ness: I always need more Ness in my life!

Of Scars and Stardust – Andrea Hannah: This was my second favourite book of the year, which I had as a digital advance copy but I need to own a physical copy. I wanted to read it again as soon as I’d finished it!

Rebel Belle – Rachel Hawkins: It looks so pretty and sounds bad-ass too!

Heir of Fire – Sarah J. Maas: So much love for this series but I just keep forgetting to buy it!

The Bane Chronicles – Cassandra Clare: I never did finish TMI but Alec and Magnus Bane were totally my favourites.

tttcoll2

The Jewel – Amy Ewing: I need to fill the void that The Selection trilogy has left and this sounds like it could be up to the job. There’s too long to wait until The Heir is released!

Subversive Horror Cinema (Countercultural Messages of Films from Frankenstein to the Present) – Jon Towlson: I don’t buy a lot of non-fiction books but one or two always end up on my Christmas list. I’m a huge fan of cinematic horror and this sounds really interesting to me.

Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe – Benjamin Alire Sáenz: I’ve heard so many wonderful things about this book. It’s been on the top of my wishlist for a while now.

The Girl Who Walked on Air – Emma Carroll: I loved Frost Hollow Hall and have been meaning to buy this one, the second book by Emma, since it was released. I have failed.

The Chaos Walking Trilogy – Patrick Ness: It makes me sad that I don’t own these books. I borrowed them off my friend Di but I definitely need my own copies ASAP!

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

5. BURIAL RITES – Hannah Kent

burial Iceland. Murder. An execution. Amazing.

Goodreads

Set against Iceland’s stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution.

Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her. But as Agnes’s death looms, the farmer’s wife and their daughters learn there is another side to the sensational story they’ve heard.

Riveting and rich with lyricism, BURIAL RITES evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?

There’s still time for Carrie to make this the best Christmas ever… after all, Christmas is the time for miracles, isn’t it? Let the festivities begin!

Review

A Christmas to Remember is a heart-warming, feel-good, festive read. It follows protagonist Carrie through what she hopes is her last job as Nanny, over the Christmas period.

These kind of chick-lit holiday books are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. You know exactly what you’re going to get – drama, romance and a warm and fuzzy ending – and this book didn’t disappoint. Plus, it had other aspects that I wasn’t expecting too.

Carrie loves her job but it’s meant that she’s had to make a lot of sacrifices in her personal life. When she’s on a job she is on call 24/7. She has little-to-no time for friends, her own family or outside commitments so she finds herself in her 30s with no friends to speak of, no man, or even past relationships. All she has is her work – other people’s children.

I found Carrie quite relateable, but man, she was way too neurotic for me! She’s all like wahhhhh I love my job, but wahhhhhhh I want my own family. And then there was all the ‘am I supposed to eat dinner with his family?’ and ‘he’s just being polite, he doesn’t like me blahblahblah. Arrrghhh. I wanted to scream in her face… and that’s not a bad thing! You should all know by now, that I love a book I have to scream at. I couldn’t put it down, and ended up devouring it in two sittings.

I also really liked that Adam, the work-a-holic whose life she enters (and takes over) owns his own brewery. I thought it gave a bit of a unique edge to the story as it wasn’t something I was expecting. Usually in this type of story the guys are all corporate business men with faceless/nameless companies, but here we realise that Adam’s journey has been a rags-to-riches one, and that he’s a self-made man through sheer determination and hard work. It definitely helped me to warm to him despite him being a rubbish father to begin with.

And y’know, he’s clearly pretty hot.

Overall, A Christmas to Remember was a fun, festive story that I couldn’t stop reading. What more can you ask for? Pass the mince pies!

When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he’s not alone. He’s surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade – a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they came to be there – or what’s happened to the world outside.

Review

OK so this is more of a book-to-movie rant than it is a review. Soz.

I really wanted to read the book before I watched the film, but that didn’t happen. And it turned out that I really loved the film. I needed to know what happens next so I figured I’d finally pick up the first book and move on to book two ASAP…but now I’m not really sure I want to.

In my experience with book to movie adaptations, I ALWAYS prefer the book, and spend a lot of time ranting about what they changed or missed out…but I also nearly always read the book first.

Therefore, with The Maze Runner, I found it really hard to judge how much I would have enjoyed it if I’d read it first, because seriously guys, I preferred the film so much more. I found myself picking out parts they did better in the film and completely agreed with why they changed some things.

In the book, protagonist Thomas is a bit of a cry-baby to start with and I just found him annoying throughout. I also much preferred the relationship between both Thomas and Chuck and Thomas and Teresa in the film. The book felt quite one dimensional and evoked little emotion from me.

I guess I liked that the whole solving the maze was more about the code in the books, but then I think what they did in the film with the Griever’s machinery as it were, was genius.

Overall, it is a really great story full of action and suspense but I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series. Don’t get me wrong, I do still really want to know what happens next, but I kind of want the movie version not the book one.

And that my friends, is truly a first.

It leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

Festive Thursdays: So much festive!

desktop-christmas-hd-desktop

Every Thursday I’m going to be sharing with you all of my Christmas preparation, the books I’m reading, the films I’ve watched, gift ideas I’ve found, and the festive events I’ve attended. Because, well, I LOVE CHRISTMAS SO HARD.

I didn’t manage to post last Thursday, but to be honest I didn’t do much anyway, other than making a mini Gingerbread House and watching Frozen four times in two days. No, really.

Anyway, on to this week’s rundown…

1. Christmas Cakes (stage 1)

As I mentioned in my first post, I’m putting together some Christmas hampers to give as presents this year. Everything is going to be made by yours truly, with the exception of the baskets/boxes (which I don’t have yet), and the jars!

This week, I made a start on making individual Christmas cakes by soaking the dried fruit in a whole bottle of cherry brandy, and a glug of honey brandy to boot. It smells amazing, and after a week I think it’s ready!

festivet1

I know some people soak their fruit for months but I don’t think it’s necessary. I pour brandy over the cake afterwards anyway. More booze than cake is my motto at Christmas! This is the recipe I’ve roughly followed over the last couple of years. It’s one that doesn’t require soaking at all, but I still do.

Hopefully I’ll have stage 2 – baking & decorating – done for next week’s post.

2. Chilli & Apple Jam

I’d never made jam before, or even chutney, but was assured it’s quite easy, and it really was!

I wanted a ‘jam’ that was spicy to suit my Dad and Brother’s tastes, but was also Christmassy, so I combined two different recipes – this Nigella one, which is so simple, and I added some clove-studded apples to the mixture as it boiled, which I’d seen in a different recipe I was tempted to try.

chillijam

I also used a few different types of chillies and preserving sugar instead of regular. At first I thought it wasn’t going to set, but after an hour cooling, and 30 mins in the fridge it firmed up and is a perfect consistency. The only fail – it only filled two of my jars so I had to make some more. But it was so easy it didn’t matter!

For the second batch, I added a whole lemon to the chillies (instead of the apples) and blitzed the whole lot. And I ran out of preserving sugar so just used regular. It came out just as good, and the lemon tastes really great with the chilli. This one’s my favourite. I might have to keep one for myself!

3. A Christmas to Remember

I read, and pretty much devoured this book! My review will be up on Monday, hopefully.

I also posted my review of Dying for Christmas – an altogether different kind of Christmas read!

4. Christmas 24 and the rest!

I’m such a sucker for those made-for-TV Christmas films. Seriously, I can’t get enough. Most of them are terrible, but in a really good way. And now and again you find some that are actually great, in nothing but a great way!

This week however, I watched One Christmas starring a very old and scary-looking Katharine Hepburn and THE FONZ. Sounds great right? Wrong. It was so, so bad, and not very festive at all. Avoid!

5. Miscellaneous Festive Funtimes:

IMG_3222
This week I also bought a new Christmas jumper which is AMAZING and I bought some red candles in the hopes that I’d find a cheap candelabra thing to put in the window but I couldn’t find one. Any ideas for my candles? There’s always wine bottles I guess. Bit boring though.

Up Next: More festive reads, my Christmas cake progress, and hopefully salted chocolate & cinnamon fudge gets added to my hampers. And I’m going to an ELF Quote-A-Long at my favourite cinema. Yessss!

Merry Festiving!
